Mix 1 part of linseed oil with 2 parts of mineral spirits in a jar. Next most of that oil needs to be removed. Purified linseed oil reduces the consistency of the paint and slows the speed of drying allowing the artist ample time to work and refine a particular passage of the painting without pressure.

Use a palette knife or other thin tool to stir these ingredients together. I use only art store BLO for light colors. Allow it to dry completely between coats.

To thin out the oil add 2 tablespoons 30 mL of mineral spirits into the jar. Oil paint is inherently slow drying compared to the other painting mediums such as acrylic watercolor or gouache paints. It comes in many different varieties including cold-pressed sun-bleached and polymerized.

Dip a large paintbrush into your container of linseed oil. All linseed oil variants tend to dry with a slightly yellowish tinge but on its own it dries to a high gloss. One useful way to use linseed oil is to mix it with turpentine to create a useful oil painting medium.

Brush linseed oil over the entire canvas with a large paintbrush. Viscous oils such as linseed stand oil will add body to a medium but need a certain amount of thinning with a solvent or with a more free-flowing oil such as cold-pressed linseed oil to reduce drag when brushing out. If the painting has any unwanted texture or impasto work you will need to sand that down.

To do this add layers of paint so that they are directly adjacent to each other on the canvas. At Evolve we teach our students to use a 5050 mixture of linseed oil and alkyd. Here are some other oils that you can consider for their slow-drying and polymerization qualities.

There are lots of others that you can find and use in your oil painting experiments though linseed oil remains the most popular choice by a wide margin. Of course linseed oil isnt the only slow-drying oil there is. There are specially formulated linseed safflower and other oils designed to work with these non-traditional oils.

If you do indoor painting use walnut oil instead which has the least odor of them all. Its important not to have a pool of oil on your canvas you want just an ultra-thin layer. If extending with turps 12 to ½ max.

Oil painting on canvas is a great way to paint for long sessions and even over several days. This mixture enables quick drying without excessive oil. If you dont want to go in completely free-hand draw an outline of your design in pencil first.

If the colors on the old painting are very intense consider painting a layer or two of fat titanium white not gesso on top. Just keep in mind it dries slower than most oils but then oil painting is nothing if not a constant reminder that patience is a virtue. Apply the oil to the area of the painting that needs to be worked on.

This is one of the reasons why oil paint is so widely used by artists. It is important to use refined linseed oil as raw or boiled linseed oils can yellow the paint quickly because they are heat-treated. Try creating a glaze.

To get started youll need to pour some paint thinner into a pot and squeeze out a small amount of each paint you want to use onto your palette. Begin with literally just a few drops and adjust the oilsolvent ratio according to how the mixture feels. Because of this you have much more time to manipulate oil paint on your canvas before it dries.

Dip your brush into OMS before mixing your paints. If you use too much linseed oil the glazes will bead up as you work and increase the drying time allowing dust to settle into your work. If you dont mind diluting colors with boiled linseed oil go for it.

As always if we can do anything else just let us. This can be done using a clean brush a lint-free rag paper towel or even some cheese cloth. Using alkyd alone will cause the glaze to dry as you work.

Gently swipe the oil in an upward motion across the entire canvas. In oil painting it can play an important role as it is non-yellowing and durable. Then use flat brush to smooth the paints together working with the direction of the blend.

This is when you use a solution of 13 linseed oil13 terpentine and 13 varnish to create a transparent color. Make sure you cover the entire canvas in oil so it doesnt become patchy. Pour 1 tablespoon 15 mL or so of linseed oil into a small glass container to serve as the base for your medium.

Traditional linseed oil can be used to thin water soluble oils and it will give the painting a nice sheen and add depth to the color. It works great on the abstract stuff usually the very large-sized works.
